Board of Directors

The non-profit California Mobility Center (CMC) is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of Founding Members, the CMC President and CEO, designees of funding entities, and appointed members. The primary role of the Board is to enhance the CMC vision by providing support and guidance from some of the most highly successful leaders in the future mobility industry. Our Board is dedicated to working together to discover and support innovation and commercialization for its clients and members. We invite you to read about our Board members below.

The Directors

Sixteen renowned industry professionals have signed on to guide the CMC, spanning an impressive list of top leaders and independent industry experts representing the clean mobility and energy technology sectors.

Arlen Orchard

Chair of the Board

Arlen was previously Chief Executive Officer & General Manager of SMUD until his retirement in October 2020. He has also previously served on the Alliance to Save Energy 50X50 Transportation Commission which was charged with envisioning regulatory, policy, infrastructure and investment pathways to advance clean transportation transformation.

John Absmeier

Independent Board Member

John is currently Chief Technology Officer of Lear Corporation. Prior to joining Lear in 2018, he was Senior Vice President and General Manager for the Autonomous/ADAS Business Unit at Harman International, Vice President at Samsung, and held various positions over 19 years, including Managing Director, at Delphi Labs and Automated Driving.

Elise Benoit

Board Member

Elise Benoit is the Head of Commercial Communications for Enel X - North America, as well as the VP of Marketing for the company’s e-mobility division. She supports advertising and branding for Enel X’s advanced energy services and drives the e-commerce, product marketing, and go-to-market strategy for its residential and commercial smart EV charging solutions.

Brian Bentz

Board Member

Brian is the President and CEO of Alectra Inc., the largest municipally owned utility in Canada. Brian played a major role in the creation and growth of Alectra, which involved a multi-utility merger and the acquisition of another utility. Brian has assumed an active leadership role within the energy industry and has been recognized on several occasions for his leadership.

Barry Broome

Founding Partner

Barry Broome serves as the first President and CEO of the Greater Sacramento Economic Council. The organization is the catalyst for innovative growth strategies in the Capital Region of California. He previously was the CEO of the Greater Pheonix Economic Council and Southwest Michigan First.

Henry Bzeih

Independent Board Member

Henry is currently Chief Strategy/Technology Officer Automotive at Microsoft. He has held multiple technology executive roles in automotive during the last three decades. Prior to Microsoft, Henry had roles as SVP/Global CTO of Flex Automotive, Managing Director of Kia Connected Car/Mobility division and key Product Development leadership roles at Ford.

Caroline Choi

Board Member

Caroline Choi is senior vice president of Corporate Affairs at Southern California Edison (SCE), one of the nation’s largest electric utilities, and its parent company, Edison International. Previously, Choi served as senior vice president of Regulatory Affairs as well as vice president of Energy and Environmental Policy at SCE.

Dan Grossman

Independent Board Member

Dan has been a pioneer in mobility services for more than 13 years. He’s held leadership roles with Zipcar, General Motors, Ford, and Chariot- where he was CEO. Dan is currently a Board Member and Leadership Advisor for several companies in the EV, Autonomous and last mile delivery space.

Eric Guerra

Independent Board Member

Councilman Eric Guerra was elected to represent Sacramento City Council, District 6 in April 2015. Councilmember Guerra is the incoming Chair for the Sacramento Employment Training Agency. He has advocated to support and expand career training for adults at the Charles A Jones Career and Education Center. Specifically, Eric worked to expand the manufacturing pre-apprenticeship program in collaboration with the Sacramento Valley Manufacturing Alliance.

Julia Hamm

Board Member

For more than 20 years, Julia has been a visionary leader at the center of the transformation underway to a carbon-free energy future. Serving as President and CEO of the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) since 2004, Julia has a deep understanding of the electric power sector and strong relationships with hundreds of U.S. utility executives, technology company executives, and policymakers.

Linda Hasenfratz

Board Member

Linda Hasenfratz is the CEO of Linamar Corporation. She supports one of Linamar’s key industries, the automotive industry, through her appointment as the first female director to the Faurecia Board of Directors, a French automotive supplier, in 2011 retiring from the board in May 2021. Hasenfratz has been named one of the Automotive News 100 Leading Women in 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015.

Wally Hunter

Founding Partner

Wally is a Managing Director at EnerTech Capital. Prior to EnerTech, he was a Managing Director with Royal Bank of Canada (RBC Capital Partners – $1.2 B fund). He sits on the boards of IPKeys, Powerside and Vertex, as well as the CVCA, Cornell Infrastructure Policy, and the NHL Coaches Association.

Mary Joyce

Independent Board Member

Mary Joyce holds the role of global VP and GM of UL’s Mobility and Automotive group. With 30+ years of international technology and entrepreneurial experience in the transportation sector, Joyce leverages her experience and leadership to develop and deliver solutions focusing on safety, security and sustainability in the mobility industry, particularly focusing on the ACES transformation.

Prior to joining UL, Joyce was the VP of Transportation Testing Services at SGS, a global testing, inspection and certification company. Joyce spent 20+ at automotive companies including Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Daimler Chrysler and Chrysler Corporation where she served in a variety of management and technical roles. During this time, she was awarded 14 U.S. patents in the areas of alternate propulsion and electronics.

Kelly Kay

Independent Board Member

Kelly is the President and Chief Finance Officer of the Toyota Research Institute. She previously served as the Vice President of Business Operations at Lyft, Inc. and the Chief Operating Officer and President of YapStone, Inc.

Paul Lau

Founding Member

Paul is Chief Executive Officer & General Manager of SMUD. As a 39-year SMUD veteran, he has held several executive leadership positions. He also currently serves on the boards of numerous regional and national organizations.

Dr. Prasant Mohapatra

Founding Member

Dr. Mohapatra is serving as the Vice Chancellor for Research at University of California, Davis and is a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science. He has previously held Visiting Scientist positions at Intel Corporation, Panasonic Technologies, Institute of Infocomm Research, Singapore, and National ICT Australia.

Robert Nelsen

Founding Member

Robert is currently the 8th president of California State University, Sacramento. He was the first in his family to attend college and now his experience in public higher education spans nearly three decades. Robert serves on the boards of directors of multiple Sacramento-based non-profit and economic development organizations.

Michael Terzo

Founding Partner

Michael is the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Terzo Power Systems. He is also a licensed professional engineer with over 20 years of engineering and manufacturing experience and is dedicated to the advancement of innovative and cost-effective designs.
